Final de la temporada / End of the season

Estimados

Ya un año de anillamiento. Capturamos este año 2011, en Minatitlan, 15,630 aves nuevas (de 160 especies) y tuvimos 1742 recapturas. Con lo que capturamos en oct-dic 2010, totalizamos 20,526 aves capturadas.

De estas aves, tuvimos recapturas fuera del sitio.
1 mascarita común en Winnipeg, Canada
1 chipe de corona negra en Braddock Bay Bird Observatory on the south shore of Lake Ontario
1 colorín siete colores en Louisiana
1 bolsero de Baltimore en Guatemala, cerca de Peten.
y 1 pijuy en Minatitlan.

Sobre especies raras, tuvimos un buen este año. Setophaga discolor, cerulea, palmarum, Vireo pallens, Laterallus exilis, Chondestes gramacus y Spizella pallida, Regulus calendula, etc.


Estaremos otra vez detras de las redes el año que entra, con mas trabajos sobre aves acuáticas.

One year more of banding (ringing). We captured this year 2011, in Minatitlán, 15,630 new birds (of 160 species) and we have 1742 recaptures. With the 2010 birds, we totalized 20,526 birds captured.

We will start again 2012, and we will have more work on waterbirds.

semana del 11 de sept / Week of Sept 11.

Las lluvias.. Si las lluvias nos tienen limitados. solamente 698 nuevas capturas esta semana, no pudimos trabajar casi 3 días.

Las especies cambian, y el buscabreña esta rebasado ahora por los chipes amarillos. Vimos llegar las primeras mascarita común y el pavito norteño. Primera captura de polluela sora y de garzita de tular.

The strong rain give us a brake, and we caught only 698 new birds this week. We had 3 days off for rain.
The species change and teh yellow-breasted Chat is less commun, and Yellow Warbler take over. We had our first Common yellowthroat and American Redstart. And we cget our first capture of Sora, and Least Bittern.

Semana del 4 de septiembre / Week Sept 4.

Esta semana esta marcada por dos especies nuevas para el sitio, el chipe de pradera (Setophaga discolor) y el gorrión pálido (Spizella pallida). Estamos a 296 especies registradas para el sitio (274 nada mas para este año).
Pero también por el número de capturas: 1060 nuevas capturas esta semana con 142 horas red.
Abajo les anexamos una tabla de las capturas de la semana, son solamente 27 especies, pero veran datos impresionante de buscabreña. No esta mal. Solamente esta semana capturamos (755) mas buscabreña que durante todo el primavera (676).

This week gave us two new species for the site, Prairie Warbler and Clay-colored Sparrow. We get so far, 296 bird species recorded for the site (274 just this year)

But the most impressive is the number of capture: 1060 new bird banded with 142 hour mistnets. 

Below, You could find the capture by species for this week, are only 27 species, but, give a look at Yellow-breasted Chat number. Not bad..Just this week (755) we capture more YBCh than for all the spring season (676)

Si alguien no tiene idea que significa migración lo invitamos. Hoy fue un día increible, mas bien, una noche increible.
Hoy por la mañana, cada rama, hierba esta cubierta por aves, en particular buscabreña, no pudimos abrir todas las redes y capturamos solamente 1hora 30...pero fue sufisiante: 295 aves capturadas, de las cuales 254 buscabreñas...miran las fotos,

If somebody have no clue of the meaning of Migration, come to visit us, you will understand. It was a unbeliavable day, better night...

Today just before day light, each single grass, ting were covered by at least one bird, mainly Yellow-breasted Chat. We cannot open all the nets, and we captured only 1 hours and half, but it was enough: 295 birds captured (254 Yellow-breasted Chat), give a look at the pictures..

Perfil:

tener amplia experiencia en anillar aves, sacar de las redes, procesar, edad, sexo, todas especies de paseriformes. saber manejar Excel, Ppt, saber manejar coche (tener licencia). Ingles apreciado, español indispensable.

trabajo

anillar diario. realizar un reporte semanal, entrar datos y todo lo relacionado con las sesiones de anillamiento (recargar los anillos, fotocopiar las hojas, etc, etc..).

El trabajo esta pesado. Son dias muy largos de trabajo, las noches cortas. Se trabaja tres semanas completas incluido domingo y 7 días de descanso.

Se necesita alguien con compromiso al proyecto, que no teme los mosquitos, serpientes y gran cuantidades de aves en las redes (hay dia a mas de 200 aves).

El salario es según experiencia.

Una nueva especie para el sitio / A new species for our site

La migración estuvo muy tranquila, apenas 50 aves hoy. Pero una sorpresa...El chipe de pradera (Setophaga discolor), primera captura de esta especie supuestamente rara para la costa de Veracruz, llevando el listado de aves por el sitio a 295 especies, y para el 2011, 273 especies de aves observadas

The migration was very slow last night with only 50 and so birds captured this morning. But we get a surpirse, with the Prairie Warbler, the first captured for this species, normally considered as rare for Veracruz State. Our bird list is now reaching the 295 bird species, and only for 2011, we get so far 273 species observed or captured.

La migración sigue, y ayer 120 aves mas en nuestras redes. La sorpresa fueron los primeros chipes gorjeadores (Icteria virens). En primavera capturamos 602 chipes gorjeadores. Veremos cuanto capturamos durante esta temporada.

The migration follow, and yesterday we capture 120 birds. The surprise was the first Yellow-breasted Chats. During the last spring we capture 602 of those. We will see how many we capture during the fall season.

La migración parece bien en caminada. Los números de capturas suben y la semana pasada con 523 aves deberia ser rebasado esta semana. Con solamente 4 dias ya tenemos 90% del total de la semana pasada. 
Los bolseros castaños son los mas comunes y despues los chipes amarillos.

The migration is well advance now. The number of birds captured increase, and the result of the last week with 523 birds should be forgotten. With only four days we get 90% of the last week total capture. We have still 3 days of banding. The Orchard Oriole are the communest and followed by Yellow Warbler.

Hoy 65 bolseros castaños capturados. Vamos a tratar de hacer mejor mañana antes de que nos toque la tormenta Harley.
Vimos nuestro primer martin-pescador norteño (Megaceryle alcyon) y paso un joven de playero de Baird (Calidris bairdii).

Durante que anillamos algunos mosquitos disfrutan de que tenemos las manos ocupadas con las aves para alimentarse...

During the banding, some mosquitos use the opportunity that we have full hand of birds to feed.

Cerca de las redes, no para de observarnos este búho bien tranquilo en la sombra de las ramas de un saulce.

Close to the nets, a Striped Owl stay tune to our activity. It stays quiet in the shade of the Willow tree.

 

Hoy capturamos nuestro primer vireo de ojo rojo, un chipe patulillo (Oporornis formosus) y un rascon cuello gris y nada mas 43 aves.
Today we captured our first Red-eyed Vireo and Kentucky Warbler  and a Grey-necked Wood Rail but  only 43 birds.

despues de una noche tranquila, con viento ligero de Norte, las redes se abrieron y de imediato se llenaron. Casi puro Bolsero castaños.. Capturamos hoy 116 de estos, y algunas cositas mas, pero mucho, mucho Bolseros castaños. Muchos jovenes y los adtultos empiezan a mudar.
Veremos mañana.

After a quiet night, with slight north wind, we open the nets and immediatly they get full. Almost only Orchard Oriole. Today we captured 116 Orchard Orioles and few other species, but lot of Orchard Orioles. Lot of young birds, and the adults starts to molt. 

We will see what's up tomorrow...

despues de una noche marcada con tormentas electricas y violentas lluvias, amanecemos los pies en el agua, las redes mojaradas y en espera de las pocas aves que decidieron migrar esta noche.
Finalmente, no fue tan mal, con 51 capturas y nuestra primer Prothonotaria citrea para el sitio.

After a night with electric storms and very strong rains, we wake up the feet in the water, the mistnet dead wet and waiting for the few crazzy birds migrating below these conditions. Finally, It wasn't that bad with 51 birds and our first ever Protonotary Warbler.

11,000 aves en 8 meses / 11000 birds in 8 months

Hoy rebasamos las 11,000 capturas desde Oct 2010. Tuvimos un lapso de calma en junio y julio, pero ahora la migración regresa con fuerza. Hoy 64 bolseros castaños en nuestras redes, el primer chipe arroyero del año y los dos primeros chipes amarillos de la temporada.

Today we get over 11,000 birds captured since Oct 2010. During June and July, It was fairly low capture rate, but now the migration is back. Today we captured 64 Orchard Oriole, the first Louisiana Waterthrush and the two first Yellow Warbler of the season.

Nueva especie confirmada para Veracruz / New confirm Species for Veracruz

en el transcurso de nuestro trabajo, capturamos este jovén Vireo.. fue una sorpresa, y con cuidado nos aventuramos a identificarlo. Consultamos en diferentes lugares y si este Vireo es un Vireo pallens, el primer registro con evidencia para el Estado de Veracruz.

During our banding work, we captured this young Vireo. a nice surprise, and before say anything we check around to confirm id. This Vireo is a Vireo pallens (Mangrove vireo), the first confirm for Veracruz State.

Hoy en la mañana, varias especies presentes. Tringa flavipes, melanoleuca, solitarius, Calidris minutilla, pusilla, himantopus y Actitis macularius. Capturaron solamente dos calidris y hubo bastante lluvia que complico la operación. Pero nada mas empezamos. Ya estamos a 149 especies de aves capturadas en el sitio este año, y la migración de otoño esta por llegar.

This morning, several species of shorebirds: Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs, Solitary, Least, Semipalmated, Stilt and Spotted Sandpipers. We caught only two Shorebirds, and rain fall were fairly strong, sp not easy this time. But we start...We have so far 149 species captured this year on this site and the fall migration is coming.

Estamos trabajando para seguir las poblaciones de aves y poder tener idea de las fluctuaciones anuales, tanto en aves residentes que en aves migratorias asi como de los efectos de los trabajos de remediación que realiza Pemex Refinación en el Pantano de Santa Alejandrina sobre las especies y poblaciones de aves. Ademas, para las aves migratorias, somos la única estación en México dedicado al seguimiento completo de las migraciones, tanto de primavera que de otoño, dia tras dia.. Y la migración parece empezar. Hoy, dos Wilsonia citrina y un Oporornis formosus, sin contar los Icterus spurius. Estan llegando. Entonces vamos a empezar el seguimiento de la migración la próxima semana. Pensabamos iniciar el 15, pero el 9 va ser nuestra fecha de inicio. Preparanse.

Les compartimos una foto de un ala de Volatinia jacarina. Una muda bien extraña, con las primarias internas y la segundaria 1 mudadas, probablemente durante la primavera.

También ya capturamos Icterus spurius con mucha grasa, se ven grupos de icterus spurius en todas partes, moviendose..

We share below a picture of a weird molt of Blue-black Grassquit. Un very weird molt pattern, because PP1 -5 and S1 are probably from the spring molt.

Now, the Orchard Oriole get fat, lot of fat and we can observed small groups all around moving.

Algunas especies empiezan a aparecer en el sitio, desde el 2 de julio los bolseros canelos ya llegaron. Desde entonces, avoceta americana, playero alzacolita, patamarilla menor y rayador americano llegaron. Un primer sentir de la migración. Es interesante pero a inicio de Julio se observo un patamarillo menor en Lituania, que es también el primer registro de esta especie para este país. La prueba que ya se mueven y algo.

Few species starts to move down, and shows up in our site. Since July 2nd, the first Orchard Oriole get caught. Since, American Avocet, Spotted Sandpiper, Lesser Yellowlegs and Black Skimmer were registred on our site. The firt glisme of migration. It's interesting to focus on this observation of Lesser Yellowlegs seen in Lituania beginning of July (first record for this species in this country), showing that this species is really moving now.

Hoy logramos encontrar la especie 289. Y que especie. Laterallus exilis. Si leiste bien. Un ave que no se conocia para Veracruz y que se descubrio en México en 2009 (diciembre) cerca de Guatemala en Chiapas. Y ahora esta grabación del sur de Veracruz..Una extansión de rango bastante significativo.

Today we get our species No. 289. And what species..Gray-breasted Crake. Yep, Gray-breasted Crake. One new species for Veracruz State and recently discovered for Mexico in Dec 2009 close to Guatemala in Chiapas. Now we get this recording in the south part of Veracruz. A good range extention.

Plumaje de juv y craneo ossificado / Juv feather and full skull ossification

Siempre uno dice: Si tiene plumaje de Juvenil es una buena escuela para enseñar el craneo a alguien. Pues No. Acabamos de tener el caso, de esta ave, un Myiarchus tyrannulus que presenta TODO  el plumaje típico de juvenil y le craneo COMPLETAMENTE osificado.
Pensamos que es un jovén con un proceso rápido de osificación, otros piensan que es un adulto con un error genético que hace que el nuevo plumage se queda como juvenil.
Si tu tienes un opinion, dejanos la saber.

Always we think that if the plumage is completly juve, it's a good opportunity to show skull ossification Process. We get a surpirse. We capture a Brown-crested Flycatcher with a FULL  juvenil plumage and a skull completly ossificated. 

we think that it's a HY with a quick skull ossification process, others think that it's plumage aberration, after each molt the feather stay like a Juv.

Escuche que algunos dicen que la mandibula inferior del espatulita común es blanca para un adulto y negra para un joven.
Les pongo dos fotos, cada ave tiene AL MINIMO 2 años y medio... que les parece.
Podria ser un criteria para el sexo?

I heard that some banders use the color of lower mandibule to age Common Tody Flycatcher. White for adult, black for young. Here I attach two pictures, each birds have AT LEAST 2 years and half.

Hoy capturamos dos carpinterillos mexicanos, un ave de SY y un joven del año. El SY tenia el pico chueco y al parecer era el padre de un joven macho volantón.

Today we captured two ladder-Backed Woodpeckers: an Sy and  an HY. The SY had a very cross bill and apparently was feeding the other flying young male.

Ahora esta un poco mas tranquilo las capturas, hoy fueron nada mas 49 de 5 especies (WCSE, RWBL, GCYE, BBGR y YBCA)
Pero sigamos encontrando nuevas especies. Hoy fue un ibis cara-oscura (Plegadis falcinellus). Estuvimos checando todo el invierno, y nos equivocamos: esta aqui en verano, mezclado con los ibis cara-blanca (Plegadis chihi)

Now the banding is much more quiet, today just 49 birds of 5 species (WCSE, RWBL, GCYE, BBGR and YBCA).

But we still finding new species for this site. Today was a Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus). We was looking for this species all the winter, we was wrong it is here during summer, mixed with White-faced Ibis (Plegadis chihi).

la migración se acabo, aunque acabamos de capturar un colorín azul (Passerina cyanea) en junio en Veracruz. Ahora estamos con las especies residentes. Nos dimos cuenta que los cormoranes del sitio son TODOS jovenes. No hay adulto en verano, en invierno si. En la foto abajo, un ojo de jovén (SY), los adultos tienen el ojo muy verde esmeralda.

The Spring migration is over, but we capture an Indigo Bunting still in june in Veracruz. Now we work on the resident species. We just figure out that ALL the Neotropic Cormorant present are SY birds. Any adult during summer time. In winter we get both.Below a picture of the eye of a SY bird.

One of the surprise during the captures, it's this young Roseate Spoonbill, caught the last saturday.

We was a bit busy these days. We just finish, last week the spring migration. We end with 5700 captures of 128 species. Below a graph of the Spring migration.

De las especies comunes, es interesante notar que el buscabreña (YBCH) pasa antes de los colorines siete colores (PABU) y del zorzal de Swainson (SWTH) como lo muestra la gráfica abajo

About the commun species, is interested to see that Yellow-breasted Chat (YBCH) cross through before the Swainson's Thrush (SWTH) and Painted Bunting (PABU) as show in the graph below. 

y dentro de los colorines siete colores, los machos adultos pasan antes de las hembras adultas, y probablemente antes de los machos jovenes. tenemos en los jovenes 40% de machos, Pyle (97) menciona 43 %.. Estamos bien cerca. ¿Seria que el año 2010 fue un año estandar para la productividad?

and whitin the Painted Bunting, the adult males arrive first, before adult female, and probably before young male. In the SY we have 40% of male, Pyle (97) mention 43%. We are very close. Could it be 2010, a standard year for ratio producitivity?

La migración bajo, menos aves estos días, solamente 567 aves capturadas en la semana del 8 al 14 de mayo: los playeros tambien ya se van, y estan pasando los picopandos ormamentada.Aqui les pongamos las 20 especies mas comunes capturadas este año hasta ahora.

The migration down, less birds these days, only 567 birds captured this week (from 8 to 14 of May). The shorebirds leave too, and the Hudsonian Godwit cross through. Below find the 20 mist commun species captured this year.

Estamos al final de la migración del buscabreña (para nosotros aqui en Veracruz), entonces nos pusimos a analizar un poco la migración por clase de edad. Es muy interesante. Los adultos pasan antes que los jovenes. Checan esta gráfica. Sem 1 es Marzo 2 a marzo 8, Sem 8 abril 23 al 29. En naranja los adultos, en azul los jovenes. La proporción cambia en la segunda semana de abril.

We touch the end of Yellow-breasted Chat spring migration (for us, down there in Veracruz). We start to analize the age calss. very interesting. The adult cross through first, and young later. Give a look at this graph. Sem 1: MArch 2nd to 8, Sem 8: April 23 to 29. In orange color adults, in blue youngs. The rate change during the second week of april.

De lo que va del año, ya hemos rebasado las 5000 capturas. Las últimas dos semanas de migración nos dieron mas de 1500 aves. Con algo de sorpresas...desde ayer el viento paso norte, y ya se calmo la cosa.

Since beginning of 2011, we captured more than 5000 birds. The alst two weeks gave us more thn 1500 birds. With some surprises, but since yesterday the wind change and it's north now, the migration slow down.

Hay 183 aves mas. Bastante trabajo. Las sopresas del día fueron Cuclillo pico amarillo y tirano tijera.
Hay muy pocos buscabreñas, creemos que el grueso de la población ya paso. Ahora nos toca, a 5 o 6 aves por día (contra 80 o 90)..Hoy hubo bastante chipes, en particular el amarillo.
Veremos mañana si podemos, por los vientos fuerte de sur que acaban de llevantarse.

183 birds more. Lot of work. The surprise of the day was Yellow-billed Cuckoo and Scissor-tailed Flycatcher. The Yellow-breasted Chat are just few birds now. It's probable that the most of the popultion get over. we just get 5 or 6 birds per days (against 80 or 90). Lot fo warblers today, mainly Yellow. 

Tomorrow, we hope that the strong wind will stop at night and gave us chance to capturre tomorrow. We are close of the 5000 birds capture this year.
